#caricatureresolution2017 Day 27: Amanda Seyfried

Yikes, another face with not much to grab hold of for caricature. Of course, I’ve said that before, and then I see other artists doing quite remarkable work out of what seemed an unremarkable face to me, so maybe I will see the same here.

For me though, I had to settle for just making her eyes kind of large, and maybe up the size of her lips. For an iconic role, I chose her character from Mean GIrls, Karen. No good reason for it, I’m just trying to make “Fetch” a thing.

#caricatureresolution2017 Day 26: Mark Wahlberg

Day 26 and I’m still keeping my resolution! With the day’s assignment of the unremarkably-featured (wow, this guy doesn’t give you much to work with in terms of facial features to grab onto and exaggerate) former Mark Mark, Mark Wahlberg.

Here he is on the beach, after skipping a lot of leg days:

Cartoon with background added.

Here is the first rough sketch. I couldn’t get much of a handle on his face. I decided to do him in the similarly cartoon style I did the previous two caricatures of this challenge, Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Preliminary sketch of Wahlberg.

Final color cartoon.

Finally, since they are all similarly stylized and all muscle dudes, why not try to put them together for a new Cartoon Network super squad?

#caricatureresolution2017 day 24: Vin Diesel

I’m switching to a cartoon style for the next few, just to force myself to keep it simple, even if the exaggeration doesn’t go very far, face-wise, anyway.

I’ll combine them all in a group shot on day 26, but for now, here’s Vincent Diesel in front of some kind of action movie explosion that he is probably in front of in something.

#caricatureresolution2017 Day 23: John C. Reilly

Started out on an exaggerated pencil drawing of JCR as the odd host of a segment of the odd Adult Swim show, “Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show, Great Job!”, Dr. Steve Brule.

Ended up getting involved in the shading too much and made it too muddy and overworked, should have stopped at the outline, or just added some hatching, but I’ve never gotten the hang of cross hatching or hatching in general.

#caricatureresolution2017 day 22: Will Ferrell

Back to a cartoony style today. I found a WIll Ferrell reference photo I liked of his face, but when it came time to do the body, I remembered his funniest role as fictional Gene Frenkle in the famous “More Cowbell” sketch on SNL and put him in that role.

Unfortunately, the face did not match the body, as the character had a longer wig and fake beard and for the beginning of the sketch, shaded glasses. So after I got the likeness (sort of) I did another version covering most of it up with the beard, just to get the character a little more accurate.

#caricatureresolution Day 21: Ben Stiller

Day 21 and I have yet to do a good exaggeration caricature with good resemblance. This one (as so many other have) started out in the exaggeration direction, but still ended up too realistic for my purposes. Even adding the ape body didn’t help much.

Ben Stiller with ape-like features enhance for cheap “chimp” joke. Sorry Ben, nothing personal.

#caricatureresolution2017 day 19: Anna Kendrick

Ms. Kendrick proved to be elusive as a caricature subject. I thought she may be easy, with her bold features: strong jawline, high cheekbones, perfect eyes and very specific nose with noticible nostrils. If I were doing a portrait or usual cartoon portrait type caricature I think I would have been done quickly, but I struggled to find an exaggeration that kept the whole resemblance, once again. THe first sketch here looks NOTHING like her and it wasn’t until I played around with the eyes that a resemblance began to take hold.

Once again, I spent more time on the rendering that gettting that initial, great resemblance and it shows. I mean, I thought it was pretty good when I went to bed, but waking up and seeing it in the cold light of a new day, I think it’s another swing and a miss. But a closer swing this time. I think it also has to do with her face being more difficult to pin down, despite my early expectations to the contrary. Or it could just be that I’m not very good at doing these kinds of caricatures yet.

#caricatureresolution2017 Day 18: Michael Cera

I really tried going big on the exaggeration this time. I really did. I started out with this huge nose and a mouth that was way off to the side and tiny, sad, close-together eyes. But it did not look like him, and it bugged me. I ended up moving some things around, making the nose smaller, the eyes wider, the mouth closer and voila, I have arrived at yet another barely-exaggerated caricature. I was proud of the painterly rendering I spent a long time on, but even after all that the resemblance doesn’t jump out and say, “oh yeah, that’s him!” to me.

So here’s another one, and it’s a good thing I’m getting all this practice in, because apparently, I need it.
